On Wednesday 15th June, Whitehall Junior School hosted the Year 6 tag rugby competition for the Uxbridge District schools.  There were ten teams entered, three of those teams represented Whitehall, and the competition was very successful.  The ten teams all played well, showing great skill and sportsmanship, and Whitehall's 'A' team even came away with Bronze medals!

  • Celebrating Shakespeare

    Fri 10 Jun 2016

As I am sure you all know, this year marks a special anniversary for Shakespeare – 400 years since his death.

We were very fortunate to be invited to be involved in a project run by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Twenty of our year six children, alongside children from four other local primary and secondary schools, performed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The performances took place in two locations. The first was on the stage at Uxbridge high (a local secondary school) and the second was at the prestigious Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theatre in Chiswick.  The experience was truly amazing for the children involved.

When asked to explain their feelings about being involved in the show, two of the responses were:

“The whole experience was a great adventure, travelling through Shakespeare’s stories."

    Nathan, year 6

“It was an interesting and fun experience but also nerve wracking. You got to spend time with your friends whilst doing what you love.”

                                                                                                      Lucy, year 6

Each school involved, was given two scenes from the play to perform. In order to ensure that our children realised their full potential, the children participated in a weekly drama workshop for eight weeks. The quality of our children’s performance was extremely high and the staff and parents were extremely proud of them.

During the national Shakespeare week, each year group focussed on reading one of his plays: year 3 read ‘The Tempest’; year 4 read’ Twelfth Night’ ; year 5 read ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and year 6 read ‘Richard III’. The children really enjoyed the stories. During this week, the Sharks’ class also did an amazing class assembly all about Shakespeare.

  • Reading for pleasure

    Fri 10 Jun 2016

As a school, we are passionate about reading. Through English lessons, the children are exposed to a wide variety of high quality novels which they read in their entirety. Always driven to develop children’s knowledge of literature, the English team set up a lunch time quiz around the school for children to complete. Around the corridors, we posted a wide variety of quotes from books that the teachers love. The children had to match the quotes and story with the author. Through doing this, our hope was that we would inspire children to try reading some new novels and become familiar with the names of a variety of quality authors.

The quiz was an inter-house competition with entries being completed on coloured paper that related to the house team colours. This element of competition motivated the children and we had evenly distributed entries from across all teams. We are pleased to announce that the winning house was Chiltern. The house captains for this team will be choosing a reward for their team.

  • Count on Us!

    Wed 08 Jun 2016

Thanks and congratulations go to Zehraa, Samujjvala and Wanglin who have been at the London Mayor's building, City Hall, today to represent our school in the final of the maths 'Count on Us' challenge.  Our team of girls performed brilliantly in the first round a few weeks back and were awarded a place in the final!  Today they competed against the best London mathematicians of their age and they did us proud; they demonstrated excellent mental maths skills whilst also remaining very polite competitors. Thank you girls, you were great representatives of our school!
