Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
On Wednesday 30th June, we held our Upper School Sports Day (Year 5 class bubbles completed their events in the morning and Year 6 class bubbles in the afternoon). Sports Day ran differently this year, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but we were very pleased that we were able to organise this event whilst still following COVID-19 safety guidelines. All Upper School pupils took part in a number of athletic events, earning points for their house team. This enabled healthy competition and the chance to demonstrate our school values. The points awarded, when combined with those from Lower School, will decide which house (Colne, Mill, Frays or Chiltern) will win the Sports Day trophy this year.
Whitehall Week's Wednesday brought more new opportunities for our Year 6 children; today the children engaged in dance and clay workshops. The children threw themselves into both activities with some very pleasing results!
Years 5 and 6 on the Wednesday 23rd June and Years 3 and 4 on the Thursday 24th June have taken part in ‘Road to Tokyo’ workshops organised by our ClubSport coaches as part of our Health and Fitness Week plans. Each class bubble had a session with these coaches where they completed a circuit of six Olympic activities: rowing, boxing, handball, archery, hurdles and long jump. All of our children thoroughly enjoyed their sessions and are also enjoying learning about the Olympic Values and Motto in readiness for this summer's Tokyo Olympic Games.
Whitehall Week fun continued for Year 6 on Tuesday 22nd June with an arts and craft workshop (where pompon creatures were created), a code cracking challenge, games on the patio and an introduction to fencing. All of our children were fully immersed in each activity. It is wonderful to see our Year 6 children taking on new challenges and enjoying themselves with their peers.
On Tuesday 22nd June, we held our Lower School Sports Day (Year 4 class bubbles completed their events in the morning and Year 3 class bubbles in the afternoon). Sports Day ran differently this year, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but we were very pleased that we were able to organise this event whilst still following COVID-19 safety guidelines. All Lower School pupils took part in a number of athletic events, earning points for their house team. This enabled healthy competition and the chance to demonstrate our school values. The points awarded, when combined with those from Upper School, will decide which house (Colne, Mill, Frays or Chiltern) will win the Sports Day trophy this year.
To launch this year's 'Whitehall Week', all Year 6 pupils visited Black Park on Monday 21st June. They had a fabulous day filled with fun activities which included: woodland walks, team building games, an outdoor escape room (where they freed the kidnapped ape) and the high wires adventure.
On Monday 21st June, we were most fortunate to have two Great British athletes visit our school as part of our Health and Fitness Week events. We were visited by British Champion and European medallist, long jumper, Feron Sayers and GB Gymnast and World Champion, Dominic Mensah. To start the day off, they delivered an inspirational assembly where they spoke about having a growth mindset and the personal qualities needed to be successful in life, not just sport. They then carried out a PE lesson with each class bubble - the children thoroughly enjoyed working with these professional athletes and a great time was had by all!
We are pleased to announce that Whitehall Junior School has maintained its Gold School Games Mark award this academic year in recognition of all the work we have done with sport despite the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whitehall Junior School were winners of a competition we entered earlier on this year with the British Athletes Commission. Our prize was an opportunity to have a virtual meeting with a member of British Athletes Commission. Today, we held a whole-school virtual meeting with multiple Paralympic and world champion, Hannah Cockroft MBE. It was such an inspirational event and one the children, and staff, thoroughly enjoyed!
An actor from the Young Shakespeare Company visited Whitehall on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th June to complete interactive workshops with each Year 6 class. These workshops focused on the Shakespeare text 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'; a text that all Year 6 pupils have studied in their English lessons this year. The workshops were thoroughly enjoyed by all of the children and they now have a thorough understanding of the story plot and main characters, consolidating their understanding of this text studied this year.
